Dhaka, July 17 (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said the country will construct the ‘much-debated’ multi-billion dollar Padma Bridge project without financial assistance from the World Bank.
“Inshallah… we’ll show the world we can construct the Padma Bridge,” she said while addressing the council of Sramik League at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).
Hasina said the government will arrange the money for constructing the bridge by mobilising the internal resources.
Referring to the overwhelming response she received from different quarters of people supporting the initiative to construct the bridge with own funds, Hasina said self-esteem is the biggest asset of a nation. “I’m delighted to get the response from people and it is the biggest achievement for us,” she said.
The premier said mentioned the government wanted to make the country self-reliant economically and has taken numerous steps to that end. “We don’t need to beg to anyone, we don’t need grants.”
She urged the Sramik League members and others to work hard with utmost sincerity so that the country could attain self-reliant. “You please go for higher production in all mills so that we can be self-reliant.”
In this connection, Hasina mentioned that the BNP-Jamaat government during their last tenure had shut down a good number of mills, including the Adamjee Jute Mills, across the country.
“We’ve reopened the closed mills, waived bank loans and interests, made sure that these mills do not plunge into losses again,” she said.
Mentioning various destructive politics of the BNP-Jammat alliance, the Prime Minister said she has the belief that the people of the country will not vote to those who are to bring back militancy and looters.
She also urged the Sramik League to be aware so that no one can play with the fate of people again. “To be in power means to change the fate of the mass people not to change the fate of particular persons,” she said.
During the AL regime, she said, there was no ‘Hawa Bhaban’ or ‘Khoab Bhaban’ to realise commission.
Terming the present government pro-workers, she said AL always thinks about the welfare of the poor and workers. “We always work to ensure fair wages for the labourers,” she said adding that with her personal initiative she has re-fixed the minimum wages for the RMG workers at Tk 3,000 from Tk 1,600.
She criticised the BNP-Jamaat government for their policy to close down all mills and make the country a dependent one. “We never ever support that kind of policy to make the country a dependent on others.”
Hasina also said the BNP-Jamaat alliance and caretaker government during their seven years’ tenure the inflation had gone up to 12-13 percent.
“After assuming office, we’ve taken steps to reduce it. We’ve also taken steps to increase our GDP growth and hopeful that we’ll touch the 7.2 percent growth this year,” she said.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that the BNP-Jamaat alliance killed 17 workers even during Ramadan when they were in power.
Presided over by Sramik League president Abdul Matin Master, the inaugural session of the council was addressed, among others, by Labour and Employment, and Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, Awami League Labour Affairs Secretary Habibur Rahman Siraj, International Labour Organisation (ILO) country director André Bogui and Sramik League general secretary Roy Ramesh.
