Dhaka, July 17 (UNB) – Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Tuesday said Buet teachers’ threat of en masse resignation will hinder the government’s effort to find a solution to the ongoing problem at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Expressing concern over the teachers’ association’s fresh programme he said “it is motivated and intentional”.
“By declaring fresh programme, the teacher’s association, I assume, is trying to turn the issue to different direction,” he said while talking to reporters at the Education Ministry this (Tuesday) afternoon.
Terming the threat of en masse resignation ‘regrettable’, Nahid said when the government is about to reach a consensus to resolve the crisis, their fresh movement would only impede the imminent solution.
The Minister said the government yesterday (Monday) met with the senior teachers and engineers as well as the former vice chancellors of Buet to take their opinion to solve the problem.
“We’re ready to take appointments of the Prime Minister and the President to apprise them of the recommendations and suggestions that came from the meeting, but the teachers’ association’s new decision within 40 minutes of our meeting frustrated us to go ahead,” he said.
Nahid also said the government is now very concerned over the issue and hope that the students, teachers, guardians and the people of the country would realise the matter and cooperate with the government to find a solution.
Replying to a question, he said the Buet is run by its own rules as an autonomous body and the government could only oversee whether they are abiding by the rules or not.
“The university’s VC and Pro-VC know well how they will run their institution,” he said, adding that the government is not trying to protect the present VC and pro-VC. “Our objective is to keep the eligible people in their position,” the minister said.
He said Buet remained closed for many days following the killing of its one student ‘Sony’. “The government is now relentlessly trying to solve the Buet crisis as early as possible,” he said.
Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and other senior officials were present.
