News - ICT-1 to pass order Wednesday on G Azam’s bail plea
Dhaka, July 17 (UNB)-The International Crimes Tribunal-1 will pass order Wednesday on the bail petition filed by former Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Ghulam Azam who is facing trial on charges of crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice M Nizamul Huq, fixed the date after hearing both the defense and the prosecution lawyers.

Moving the petition, defense counsel Barrister Abdur Razzaq sought the bail on the ground of giving the accused scope for properly performing prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.

Opposing the bail plea, prosecutor Zead Al Malum submitted that at this stage of the ongoing trial the bail cannot be entertained and using religious sentiment as an instrument for securing bail cannot be maintained in the eyes of the law.

On January 11, 89-year-old Ghulam Azam, appearing in the dock on court’s order was sent to Dhaka Central Jail after the tribunal rejected his bail prayer. Later, he was taken back to the prison cell at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMUH) for medical check-up. Since then, he has been kept there.
