Dhaka, July 18 (UNB) – Taking a swipe at the government for its move to open two bank accounts for collecting money for building the Padma Bridge, BNP front-ranking leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday said the government has given extortion an institutional recognition.
“The Prime Minister has given toll collection an institutional acknowledgment by deciding to open two bank accounts in the name of Padma Bridge construction,“ he told a discussion at the National Press Club.
Zia Nagorik Forum, a pro-opposition platform, organised the discussion titled ‘How are the Countrymen?’
The Cabinet on Monday decided to open two bank accounts, one for local currency and one for foreign currency, to receive voluntary contributions from people for the construction of the Padma Bridge.
Addressing the programme, Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said the government will not be able to implement any mega project like Padma Bridge thorough extorting money from people.
Referring to the murder of a Rajshahi University unit BCL activist Sohel Rana in a gunfight between rival factions over fund collection for the bridge, he said the ruling party men have started colleting toll from people at airports, launch ghats and bus stands in the name of the bridge.
Sohel, 23, suffered bullet wounds during the factional clash at the Rajshahi University early Monday and died at a hospital in the capital on Tuesday.
“How much taka has been collected and how much deposited will be made public once BNP comes to power,” the BNP leader said.
He said the AL leaders are only making money through extortion to use those in the next general election instead of building the bridge.
Mosharraf, also a former minister, criticised the government for its failure to arrest the growing price hike of essentials and increasing the price of utility services, including gas and electricity.
