Experts for tidal river management to cut water logging SW region

Dhaka, July 18 (UNB) – Water experts at a workshop on Wednesday stressed implementing the Tidal River Management (TRM) to cut water logging and managing sedimentation in the southwestern region of the country.

They said the TRM is a tested method in managing sedimentation in river management. This method has been applied to address the recent water logging of Bhabadaha area in the southwestern region.

Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), Delta Alliance Bangladesh Wing and Bangladesh Water Partnership jointly organised the workshop, titled ‘Drainage Congestion in Southwest Region of Bangladesh’, at BIAM auditorium in the city.

Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, State Minister for Water Resources M Mahbubur Rahman, whip Sheikh Abdul Wahab, MP, Tipu Sultan, MP, Water Resources secretary Sheikh Altaf Ali and director general of Bangladesh Water Development Board KAM Shahiduzzaman, among others, spoke at the inaugural session of the workshop. IWM executive director Prof Dr M Monwar Hossain presided.

Speaking as the chief guest, Ramesh Chandra Sen said there is no alternative except the Tidal River Management (TRM) to cut water logging and manage sedimentation of rivers in the southwestern region.

He said the government will take steps to give compensation to the farmers so that they will be willing to provide their land to implement the TRM in the region.

IWM director of Coast, Port and Estuary Division Jahirul Islam presented the keynote paper on the Tidal River Management (TRM) at the workshop.
