Chittagong, July 21 (UNB) - The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCCI) on Saturday started selling essential items among the low income groups in the city at subsidized rate for the month of Holy Ramadan.
The CCCI set up a shop at the chamber house premises from where the essential commodities will be sold to the lower-middle-class and low income people at fair price from Saturday till mid-August (Ramadan 25).
MA Latif, MP, inaugurated the programme at a function, chaired by CCCI president Murshed Murad Ibrahim.
Latif, immediate past president of the CCCI, said such initiative will help arrest the price hike of essentials. He urged the affluent segment of the society and business organisations to come forward to undertake such initiatives in order to eliminate social discrepancy, said a press release.
``The CCCI is working for the welfare of the masses along with contributing to the development of the country`s economy``.
``Chittagong Chamber will continue similar programme in future as well``, he affirmed.
CCCI president Murshed Murad Ibrahim said the initiative will certainly help the government’s initiative to control spiraling of prices of day to day necessities.
The programme will continue till Ramadan 25 from 10 am to 3 pm everyday, the release said.
Among others, chamber directors MA Salam, Mazharul Islam Chowdhury, Mahfuzul Hoque Shah, Emdadul Hoque Chowdhury, Shahin Alam, Ahid Siraj Chowdhury, Syed Jamal Ahmed and Absar Hasan Chowdhury were present.
