
Dhaka, July 24 (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday stressed the importance of increased production of renewable energy to meet the country’s growing electricity demand and protect the environment.
She said this when the delegation of a multinational energy company - Energy Holding International Incorporation - led by its Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jalal Al Ghani met her at her office.
After the meeting, PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters.
He said Energy Holding showed keen interest to work in Bangladesh’s energy sector.
Sheikh Hasina said her government has been implementing short-, mid- and long-term programmes to boost power generation in the country. As a result, she said, the country witnessed a record 6,102 mw of electricity output on Sunday.
The Prime Minister said her government, during its previous term, allowed the private sector for the first time to generate power through setting up Haripur and Meghnagat Power plants and enacted necessary laws to this end.
She said the previous Awami League government had increased the electricity generation to 4,300 mw but it came down to 3,200 mw during the rule of BNP–Jamaat alliance government.
Hasina said her present government is attaching importance to renewable energy like solar and wind power to protect the environment.
Sheikh Hasina also mentioned that the demand for electricity has increased manifold due to a change in the lifestyle of people.
In response, the Energy Holding Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) praised the tremendous success of the government in the power sector during the last three and a half years.
PM’s Energy Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury was present.
Later, Monwara Khanom Bhasani, daughter of Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani, the leader of the downtrodden, met the Prime Minister at her office.
Monwar Khanom informed the Prime Minister of her family’s various problems.
Hasina donated Tk 10 lakh to Monwara Khanom’s family.
