Humayun laid to eternal rest
Dhaka, July 24 (UNB) – Celebrated fiction writer, playwright and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed was laid to eternal rest at ‘Nuhash Palli’ in Gazipur following his last namaz-ejanaza after Zohr prayers today (Tuesday).
The janaza was held at 1:31 pm with participation of thousands of people. Later, he was buried at the litchi orchard of ‘Nuhash Palli’, the most favourite retreat of the popular writer.
Earlier, the body of Humayun was taken to ‘Nuhash Palli’ from Birdem mortuary by an ambulance at about 11:40 am.
The last journey of the celebrated writer began from Birdem at about 9:20 am. His family members and relatives accompanied the body.
After a series of meetings, the divided family members of the famous writer decided early Tuesday that the he would be buried at ‘Nuhash Palli’.
Humayun Ahmed’s younger brother Muhammad Zafar Iqbal came up with their decision at about 2:15 am after a meeting at the residence of State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanak at the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
On Monday, on their arrival from New York where Humayun Ahmed died during his treatment, his wife Meher Afroz Shaon demanded that the writer be buried at Nuhash Palli as per his last wish. “It’s his last wish,” she insisted.
Amid the brawl over the burial site selection, a delegation of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, state minister Nanak and Humayun’s younger brother Muhammad Zafar Iqbal had been at his Dhanmondi residence at night to discuss the issue with his wife Shaon.
Earlier, the Sangskritik Jote delegation and Zafar Iqbal had a meeting with the three children of the first wife of the late writer at the residence of Nanak to settle the burial dispute.
During the hour-long meeting that ended 10:00pm, Humayun’s three children -- Nova, Shila and Nuhash -- said they want the writer be laid to rest in a place where everybody will be able to visit the grave and offer prayers.
Earlier, in the evening, the family members of the late writer held a meeting at Humayun's younger brother cartoonist Ahsan Habib's Mirpur residence to decide the burial ground, but it ended inconclusively.
Later, talking to reporters, Humayun Ahmed’s eldest daughter Nova said they have documents that her late father did not want to be laid to rest at Nuhash Palli.
She also said they want to bury him as soon as possible at a place like Mirpur Intellectuals' Graveyard where anybody can pay a visit to his grave.
Humayun Ahmed died on Thursday at Bellevue Hospital, New York, after a nine-month battle against cancer at age 64, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious career of nearly four decades.
His body was flown in Dhaka earlier in the morning. Later, it was taken to Shaheed Minar around 10:25 am from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for people to pay their last respects to him.
Thousands of people from all walks of life, including politicians, educationists, cultural personalities and leaders of different socio-cultural organisations, attended the janaza to pray for the eternal peace of the popular writer.
