Dhaka, July 24 (UNB) – Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini, chairman of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), on Tuesday said corrupt people are the enemies of the country and its people, no matter which party they belong to.
“Abul Hossain should have stepped down the day his involvement with Padma Bridge corruption came to light last year. Had he resigned earlier the World Bank would not have scrapped the Padma Bridge project deal,” he said.
Amini, also the Ameer of Islami Ain Bastabayan Committee, made the remarks when a delegation of leading Olema-e-keram (Islamic scholars) from Chittagong met him at his Lalbagh office in the capital.
“The government’s abortive attempt to save Abul Hossain from the corruption charge for the last one year has proved that not only the former communications minister, but all the members of this government are also equally corrupt,” he alleged.
“Abul Hossain quit the cabinet after tainting the reputation of the people of Bangladesh. He maligned irredeemably the country’s image abroad. Had he quit earlier the damage done to the image of the country and its people would not have been so severe,” Amini said demanding immediate resignation of the government over Padma Bridge corruption.
Accusing the government stalwarts of undermining Islam, he said, “Hardly a day is passed without remarks by ministers or ruling party men against Islam. They claim the country’s madrasas are dens of militants. They are spreading falsehood against Islam aiming to tarnish the religion.”
The leader of the IOJ faction, which is also a component of the BNP-led 18-Party Alliance, urged all to force the government to step down if it does not relinquish power on its own.
Fifty Islamic scholars, including Maulana Shamsul Alam, chairman of Bangladesh Olema Committee and Shaikhul Hadith of Hathazari Madrasa and Maulana Moinuddin Ruhi, secretary general of Hefajate Islami Bangladesh, were among the delegate members.
