Dhaka, July 28 (UNB) – Dismissing the Prime Minister’s remarks in London over the next general election, the main opposition BNP on Saturday renewed its threat that the movement for restoration of the caretaker government system will get a new dimension after Eid.
“The Prime Minister’s remarks on the next polls and the ground reality do not match,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
He was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of party founder late president Ziaur Rahman along with Jubo Dal leader Saiful Islam Nirab, who came out of jail on bail recently, and other leaders of the party.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now in London on a five-day official visit, on Friday said her government is making relentless efforts to keep the country’s electoral process completely neutral and free from government interference in continuation of the free and fair election held in 2008.
The premier made the remarks when Leader of the Opposition of UK Labour Party Edward Samuel Miliband met her in her hotel suite.
Turning down the PM’s remark, Fakhrul said his party does not want any political violence and conflict, but the government is deliberately trying to create a confrontational situation. “They (govt) are trying to hold the polls under a party government without understanding the national pulse.”
“We want to tell the government there is still time to restore the caretaker system in the Constitution, or else, the movement will get a new dimension after Eid, and it will get tougher every day,” the BNP spokesman said.
Replying to a question, Fakhrul said it is proved from the activities of the government over the last three and a half years that democracy is not safe in the hand of the present regime. “So, no election can be held in a free and fair manner sans caretaker government in place.”
Reiterating his party’s stance on the election, he said BNP will not participate in any polls under a party government and will foil such move of the government together with people.
Criticising the Prime Minister for calling former Communications Minister Abul Hossain a patriot, Fakhrul said Sheik Hasina is pampering the corrupt by making such comments.
“It’s mysterious as to why the PM called a corrupt person a patriot. The people of the country want to know the reason behind it,” he said.
