News - NHRC boss for ensuring human rights
Dhaka, July 28 (UNB) - Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof. Dr. Mizanur Rahman stressed on the need for ensuring human rights in the country.

Addressing a workshop at BRAC Centre in the city on Saturday, he said that all the people across the world are entitled to enjoying equal rights and facilities.

The NHRC chief called for improving and making progress of the human rights situation across the world.

The NHRC in cooperation with UNDP, Danida, Sida and SDC organised the workshop titled “Universal Periodic Review (UPR): Recommendations and Follow Up on Ratification of UN Human Rights Treaties and Reporting to the Treaty Bodies”.

United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bangladesh Neal Walker, NHRC's full-time member Kazi Rezaul Hoque and NHRC honorary member Advocate Fawzia Karim Firoze and acting additional secretary of Legislative and Parliamentary division Nasreen Begum also spoke at the workshop.

Addressing on the occasion, Dr. Mizan said that no one could take away the human rights. As the human rights are global and universal, it is the state’s responsibility to ensure the rights.

“The institutions such as Bangladesh Law Commission, Information Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission and Election Commission can play important role to ensure human rights in the country", he said.

Referring to country’s constitution, he said that the constitution called for providing financial security, including food and accommodation, to all irrespective of caste and creed.

If the government and other institutions play their effective role, the incidents of human rights violation would be reduced in the country, said the NHRC chief.
