News - Tougher campaign after Eid to restore democracy: Khaleda
Dhaka, July 29 (UNB) – BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday said her party-led 18-part alliance will launch a vigorous movement after Eid to restore democracy and save people from repression.

“The 18-party alliance will wage an irresistible joint movement after Eid to restore democracy and save people from the misrule. We’ll succeed in our fight to save people as in the past. So, every party will have to take its own preparation,” she said in an Iftar party hosted by Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) at a city hotel.

In her brief address prior to the Iftar, the BNP chief said the government will be forced through the strong movement to reinstate the caretaker government system amending the constitution.

She also urged the leaders and activists of the 18-party alliance to remain united to realise their demand and fight against the government’s all-pervasive corruption.

Referring to repression on journalists, the opposition leader alleged that the media people cannot work independently due to growing repressive acts against them by the ruling party men.

“Fourteen journalists were killed under the rule of this government. But all the incidents went un-investigated. Still, the Awami cadres are making attacks on the journalists,” she said.

BNP, if voted to power, will investigate all the incidents of journalist killings, Khaleda said.

She also promised that they will cooperate with the journalists in discharging their duties independently if the party gets back to power.

Earlier, LDP president Col (retd) Oli Ahmed received the BNP chairperson and other guests at the party.

BNP standing committee members Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Moyeen Khan, Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, and ASM Hannan Shah, LDP secretary general Redwan Ahmed, Jamaat assistant secretary general Prof Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh Jatiya Party president Andalib Rahman Partha, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party president Shafiul Alam Prodhan, Kalyan Party chairman Maj Gen (retd) Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, Labour Party president Mustafizur Rahman Iran and former DU vice chancellors Prof Emaj Uddin Ahmed and Prof Moniruzzaman Miah, among others, attended the Iftar.

A special munajat was offered seeking divine blessings for peace and prosperity of the people of Bangladesh.
