Dhaka, July 30 (UNB) - Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Monday said they were trying their best to resolve the ongoing crisis at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).
“We’re trying our best to break the standoff,” he told reporters after a high-profile meeting on the Buet crisis at his Secretariat office.
Declining to divulge the outcome of the meeting, Nahid said he cannot exactly say when the crisis will be over. “We’ll let you know if we reach a decision.”
Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof AK Azad Chowdhury, State Minister for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman, Education Secretary Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and senior officials of the ministry attended the meeting that began around 10:45am at the Education Ministry.
Sources said the meeting discussed the demands and allegations of the Buet Teachers’ Association and formation of a judicial enquiry commission to probe the allegations.
On Sunday, Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Younus Ali Akond filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directives for the reopening of Buet within 24 hours. He also sought directives from the High Court to the authorities concerned to take measures to resolve unrest at Buet.
Asked about the writ petition, Nahid said, “We’re yet to get the copy of the writ. We’ll look into the matter once we get it.”
Meanwhile, the teachers' association sat in a meeting at about 1.30pm to decide their next course of action.
The Buet teachers launched a tough campaign against its VC on July 11 after the university was shut down for 44 days in advance for Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr vacations
