Dhaka, July 30 (UNB) – Speakers at a discussion here on Monday demanded the government bring the house owners defying the House Rent Control Act 1991 to justice under criminal procedure to reduce the harassment and sufferings of tenants.
They also demanded the government increase surveillance for proper implementation of the House Rent Control 1991 and ensure the rights of tenants.
They also voiced concern over the government’s inaction to put an end to the sufferings of nearly 1.5 crore tenants of Dhaka city.
The National Tenants Council, a platform tenants working for ensuring their rights, organised the discussion at the National Press Club.
General secretary of Nagorik Andolon Mahmudur Rahman Manna, president of National Tenants Council Bahraina Sultan Bahar, Goribi Hotao Andolon convenor Nurul Haq Mehidi, central leader of Gonotantrik Bam Mourcha Saiful Haque, journalists, garment workers association leaders, among others, spoke at the function.
Syed Nuruddin Ahmed, a member of the platform, read out a written statement at the discussion placing a number of demands.
“Though the country’ has a relevant law, there’s no tangible effort from the government side for its proper enforcement,” Nuruddin said in his statement.
According to the law, the house owners can raise house rent only after every two years, but they increase it abruptly at their sweat will and take hefty amount of money in advance defying the law, he said.
Mentioning that the house owners evade taxes, Nuruddin also recommended bringing the house rent business under direct tax for boosting revenue.
He also suggested taking measures so that the tenants can pay their rents through bank accounts to help government earn revenue from the rent.
Addressing the function, Manna urged all to forge a united movement to get rid of the problem and put pressure on the government to enforce the law.
“Only holding discussion won’t help…. to realise our demands, we need to work together. If we can form a human chain from Gulistan to Gabtoli it will force the government to act,” Manna observed.
