News - PUST closed amid unrest; proctor assaulted, 10 injured
Pabna, Aug 1 (UNB) – Pabna Science and Technology University (PUST) was declared closed for 31 days from Sunday (Aug 5) following violence on the campus that left 10 people injured on Wednesday.

Five students were also arrested for assaulting the university proctor, M Kamruzzaman.

A press release signed by Bijon Kumar, Deputy Registrar of the university, said the authorities decided to keep all the classes closed from August 5 to September 4 due to the prevailing situation on the campus.

The authorities also decided to temporarily expel five students on charge of assaulting the proctor and five teachers.

Earlier in the day, police arrested five PUST students -- Mahadi Hasan Sajib, 19, Al Amin, 20, Sajjad Hossain, 20, Baki Billah, 21, and Khaled Hossain, 20, -- in connection with the assault.

The students, who have been staging demonstration since July 17 to realise their nine-point demand, including the resignation of PUST Vice Chancellor Dr Mozaffar Hossain, intercepted a university microbus carrying proctor M Kamruzzaman and five other teachers near Mujahid Club in the town around 8:30 am.

Later, the agitating students physically assaulted them.
On information, police rushed in and charged batons on the students, leaving at least 10 injured. The law enforcers also picked up five students from the spot.

Later, the proctor filed a case against the five students under the Speedy Trial Act.

Meanwhile, the agitating students alleged that the authorities resorted to repression on them to foil their rightful movement.

They said police charged truncheons on a group of 30-40 students and arrested five of them while they were going to the campus on foot.

The students later took out a procession, held a rally and formed a human chain in Town Hall area demanding release of their arrested fellows.

Additional police have been deployed on the campus to fend off further trouble.

The students have been on class boycott since July 17 to realise their demands, which also include launching probe into alleged corruption by the VC.
