Caretaker system unconstitutional: Hanif
Dhaka, Aug 5 (UNB)- Terming Non-party Caretaker Government System ‘unconstitutional’, Awami League Acting Secretary General Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Sunday said the ruling party will not hand over power to an unelected and unconstitutional government.
“There is nothing in the name of Caretaker government in the constitution at present. So Awami League will not hand over power to any government selected unconstitutionally,” Hanif said in a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
Bangabandhu Sankskritik Jote (BSJ) organized the discussion at DRU in the city marking the National Mourning Day.
While speaking as the chief guest, Hanif described BNP stalwart Moudud Ahmed as an opportunist and refuted his speech that the prime minister’s all party interim government proposal is unconstitutional.
He said BNP will not achieve anything through waging movement for caretaker government and told the party leaders to join the parliament to place their demands.
He urged the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to refrain from observing the 15th August as her birthday and to show respect to the Bangabandhu and his family members, all of whom were killed on the day in 1975.
“Nation will express hatred toward opposition, if it continues to observe the 15th August with festivity,” Hanif argued.
He claimed that Khaleda Zia established herself as agent of anti-liberation force and her days with the Pakistani armies in cantonment during the liberation war was very amusing while general people were passing very critical time.
Paying rich tribute to the memory of Bangabandhu, he said there will exist nothing discriminatory and unjust in the country, if people take lessons from the life and ideals of father of the nation.
Speaking on the occasion, State Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advocate Quamrul Islam said opposition will create anarchy in the country for reinstatement of the Caretaker Government (CG) system and protecting the war criminals.
But it (opposition) will not be able to reinstate CG system and Awami League is not afraid of any threat and movement of opposition, he added.
He mentioned that the trials of war criminals, the 21st August Grenade attack case and 10-truck arms haul Case are going to end.
Advocate Quamrul expressed hope that trial of some war criminals detained on charge of committing crime against humanity in 1971 will be completed in this year.
Criticizing BNP leader Moudud Ahmed for his opinion that government is influencing the judiciary, he claimed that the judiciary is completely independent and neutral now.
On Bangabandhu murder case, he said BNP tried to prevent the trial.
Presided over by BSJ President and Lawmaker Tarana Halim, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Krishak League organising secretary M A Karim and Dhaka City Awami League Organising Secretary Shaha Alam Murad.
