Dhaka, Aug 5 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said Bangladesh attaches highest importance to its relations with Nepal and expressed satisfaction that over the last three and half years, relations between the two countries have seen substantial progress.

The PM made the remarks when the visiting Nepalese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha called on her at her official residence Gonobhaban.

PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed the reporters after the meeting.

Referring to bilateral trade, Sheikh Hasina stressed the need for expanding export and import of commodities from both the countries for mutual benefit.

Putting emphasis on cooperation in water sector, she said Nepal and India could collaborate in water resources management for the augmentation of dry season flows, and flood management and mitigation as well as for the production of hydro-electricity.

The Prime Minister mentioned that Bangladesh is planning to hold the first meeting of Joint Working Group comprising representatives of the three neighbouring countries -- Bangladesh, Nepal and India, and hoped that Nepal will take part in the meeting.

During the meeting, Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister underscored the need for more cooperation on different sectors including trade, electricity and water.

He hoped that the existing friendly relations between the two countries will be strengthened further in the coming days.

The Prime Minister presented to the Nepalese Minister a book titled “The Unfinished Memoirs” by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Later, Sri Lankan Minister for External Affairs GL Peiris also called on the Prime Minister at her official residence Gonobhaban.

Hasina recalled the extremely fruitful visit of Sri Lankan President to Bangladesh in May in 2011.

She underscored the need for further strengthening the existing friendly relations between the two countries for mutual benefit.

The Prime Minister mentioned that Bangladesh has always been consistent in supporting Sri Lanka’s fight against terrorism and militancy.

During the meeting, the Sri Lankan Minister praised Sheikh Hasina for her able leadership in the world arena on different issues including climate change.

He expressed the hope that the existing relations between the two countries will be further strengthened in the days to come.

Later, the Prime Minister presented to the Sri Lankan Minister a book titled “The Unfinished Memoirs” by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin was present during the meeting.
