News - Petitions challenging legality of bus torching case dismissed
Dhaka, Aug 5 (UNB) - A Dhaka court on Sunday dismissed two criminal revision petitions filed by four leaders of the 18-party alliance, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, challenging the legality of a case filed for torching a bus near the PMO on April 29.

M Zahurul Haque, Judge of the Metropolitan Session Judges Court, passed the order after counsels for the opposition leaders submitted the petitions in the morning.

The three other leaders are MK Anwar and Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain of BNP and President of Liberal Democratic Party Col (retd) Oli Ahmad.

In their petitions, the counsels said the charge framing order against their clients was not appropriate as the defence side did not given enough time for necessary preparations.

On July 31, Metropolitan Speedy Trial Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid framed charges against 46 opposition leaders, including Fakhrul, in the case.

The court had also issued a warrant for the arrest of BNP leaders Sadek Hossain Khoka, Amanullah Aman and Nazimuddin Alam rejecting their time petition in the case. The trio, however, secured bail from the same court later.

The judge had fixed August 7 for starting trial of the accused in the case filed by Tejgaon police for torching the bus in front of the Prime Minister’s Office during hartal enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance.
