Khaleda formally rejects PM’s small cabinet offer
Movement to continue until CG is restored, she says

Dhaka, Aug 5 (UNB) – BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday formally turned down the Prime Minister’s small cabinet proposal saying the offer was given to ensure Sheikh Hasina’s return to power.
“We don’t accept the proposal…the Prime Minister made the offer so that she can remain in power and ensure the return of her party to power. We reject the proposal,” she said.
She was addressing an Iftar party hosted by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club.
In the face of the BNP’s long-drawn demand for restoration of the caretaker government system, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a recent interview with BBC, suggested formation of a small cabinet with representation from the BNP before the next general election. She also asked BNP to come up with their proposal in parliament in this regard.
In her brief address prior to the Iftar, Khaleda once again demanded that the next election be held under a non-party caretaker government. “No election will be allowed to be held under any party government. We want the next election under a non-party administration. The government will have to amend the constitution to reinstate the caretaker government system.”
Threatening to continue the opposition’s movement until the CG is restored, the former premier said they will establish a democratic government and the rule of law in the country unseating the present regime through a strong movement.
She also urged people from all walks of life to get united under a single platform to launch a vigorous movement after Eid to save the country from the hand of this ‘failed and incompetent’ government.
Mentioning that the country is going through a hard time due to the misrule of the government, the BNP chief said people want to get rid of this dismal condition.
“People want security, peace and discipline. But now a chaotic situation has created in the country …there is no discipline in any sector. Ruling party men are busy extorting money, killing and torturing people. They have no respect for people and they are even assaulting teachers and journalists. Sixteen journalists have been killed by the time,” Khaleda told her audience.
Terming the government undemocratic, she alleged that the government has resorted to torture on the opposition and filed ‘false cases’ against them in a bid to keep them away from the movement.
Referring to the communications minister’s disappointment over the rundown road in Chandupr, the ex-Prime Minister said the roads and highways across the country even in the capital are in very bad shape.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, during his recent visit to Chandupr, voiced unhappiness over the sorry state of the roads in the district.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, Mirza Abbas, and Nazrul Islam Khan, BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi, and general secretary Shawkat Mahmud, National Press Club president Kamal Uddin Sabuj, and general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed, DUJ president Abdus Shahid, and general secretary Muhammad Baker, editors of different national dailies and eminent citizens, among others, attended the Iftar party.
