Dhaka, Aug 7 (UNB) – Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni Tuesday said that Bangladesh considers the recent political crisis of the Maldives as its internal affair and hopes this will be resolved in accordance with the constitution of the country.
She further stated that the Maldives should seek necessary assistance from institutions such as the Commonwealth in its journey to consolidate democracy in that country.
Dipu Moni made the remarks when the Maldives Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Hameed paid a courtesy call on her at the Foreign Ministry.
She expressed the hope that the Maldives, through upholding the spirit of the SAARC Charter of Democracy and the values and principles of the Commonwealth, will follow the CMAG advice to achieve an early and full resolution of the situation in a peaceful manner.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Hameed briefed Dipu Moni on the latest political situation in the Maldives.
He informed that the Commission of National Inquiry recently reconstituted as per CMAG advice has been working towards finding the circumstances of the change of government in February 2012 and that this would help in reaching a settlement of the political dispute.
The Deputy Foreign Minister of the Maldives expressed his appreciation for the government of Bangladesh for organizing the Conference on People’s Empowerment and Development.
Dipu Moni welcomed Ali Hameed and thanked him for coming to Dhaka to attend the International Conference on `People’s Empowerment and Development’.
She thanked the Deputy Minister for his contribution in the conference, which has enriched its outcome.
During the discussion, Dipu Moni asserted that Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relationship with the Maldives and expressed satisfaction at the pace of development of the relations.
She thanked the government of the Maldives for its initiative for registration of Bangladeshi expatriate workers in the Maldives and requested the Maldives government to look after their welfare.
The Foreign Minister expressed the hope that the two countries would be able to come up with ways to exploit the full potential in all areas including trade, tourism, investment and cultural exchange.
She also expressed satisfaction that a number of students from the Maldives were pursuing higher studies in Bangladesh and assured that more such students would be welcome to study in both public and private institutions of Bangladesh.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Hameed also informed that the Air Services Agreement between Bangladesh and the Maldives had been signed recently.
He hoped that direct flights between the two countries would begin soon and it would enhance tourism and bilateral trade.
