4 mobile operators gets 2G licenses

Dhaka, Aug 7 (UNB) - The government has renewed 2G licenses of four mobile phone operators for a period of 15 years.

Grameenphone (GP), Banglalink, Robi and Citycell are the four operators who got the licenses nine months after they applied.

Present as the chief guest, Minister for Posts and Telecommunication Rajiuddin Raju gave the renewed licenses among the operators at the seminar hall of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission in the city on Tuesday.

Earlier, the ministry declared notification of renewal of the licenses on 17 October, 2011. After the notification, the four operators submitted Tk.3184.22 core as the first installment. They will deposit money in two more installments on Aug 31, 2012 and 1 September 2013 as license and spectrum charge. After nine months of their negotiations, the ministry finally handed over the licenses for 15 years for their business in telecommunication sector.

Grameenphone CEO Tore Johnson, Robi CEO Michael Kuehner, Banglalink's Chief Technical Officer Ahmed Fady and Citycell CEO Mehboob Chowdhury took the licenses from the telecom minister.

Hasanul Haque Inu, MP, Sunil Kanti Bose, secretary, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication, Zia Ahmed, chairman of BTRC and top officials of the operators were present at the function.

Raziuddin Raju, Minister for Posts and Telecommunication said under the bold leadership of Sheikh Hasina the users of mobiles operators have expanded. He called on the BRTC chairman to ensure that 3G is the future and added that the BTRC should support the new technology.

Hasanul Haque Inu, MP said in Bangladesh there is a positive environment to launch business, and foreigners are investing in Bangladesh. He called for more foreign direct investment in the telecom sector.

Speakers said mobile telecommunication played an important role in our country as it created job opportunities for 15 lakh people. "Mobile phone has changed our lifestyle, social scene, helped create good governance, reduce gender discrimination, empowered rural women and reduced digital divide through expansion of internet in rural areas.
