Jhenidah, Aug 7 (UNB) - At least 30 people were injured, four of them with bullets, in a series of clashes between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the Islamic University campus and in its adjoining areas on Tuesday.
Campus sources said the clashes took place as the BCL leaders came under attack by their rivals.
BCL IU unit president Jahangir Hossain along with others was coming to the campus from Jhenidah town by a bus at about 11am when the supporters of Gaffar group halted the bus at Bardah in Shailakupa thana by road barricade and vandalized the vehicle and attacked the BCL president.
The incident then resulted in a clash, leaving 15 people wounded.
Police later quelled the situation.
At about 12:30pm, the two groups again attacked each with home made weapons and bullets at Sheikh Para Bazar, turning the area into a battlefield.
Police brought the situation under control by firing 15 rubber bullets and 12 rounds of canister shell.
About 15 people, including two cops, were injured in this clash.
The injured were admitted to different local hospitals.
Shailakupa thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam Shaheen said there had been a longstanding conflict between the two groups, one led by Jahangir Hossain and another by Abu Jar Gifari Gaffar, ex-general secretary of IU unit BCL.
