Dhaka, Aug 7 (UNB) - BNP standing committee member MK Anwar on Tuesday said the government is undermining a noted person like Nobel Peace Prize laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus instead of taking his assistance in building the nation.
“The government has globally disgraced Prof Yunus launching an investigation into the activities and financial transactions of Muhammad Yunus as MD of Grameen Bank,” he told a discussion at the National Press Club.
Bangladesh Kindergarten Teachers’ Association organised the discussion followed by an Iftar party.
The cabinet has recently asked the Banking and Financial Institution Division to inform it in consultation with the Bangladesh Bank how much salary and allowances Dr Muhammad Yunus, the former Managing Director of Grameen Bank, had withdrawn after his 60 years of age.
It also directed the Banking and Financial Institution Division to be sure whether the withdrawal of those salary and allowances was done legally.
Directives were also given to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) whether there was any evidence of tax evasion in case of Dr Muhammad Yunus’ foreign currency income shown as wage earners income.
Strongly protesting the government action, MK Anwar asked it to refrain from such heinous attempt to defame a personality of international repute.
Accusing the Prime Minister and her cabinet colleagues of amassing huge wealth illegally, the BNP leader said ministers have failed to disclose information about their assets in the last three and a half years despite their promise to do so.
Anwar said the government has failed to fulfill any of its electoral promise.” Instead, they are doing what they were not supposed to do.”
He also called upon all to take part in the movement to be launched after Eid to unseat this ‘failed’ government and restore the caretaker government for saving the country’s existence.
