Dhaka, Aug 8 (UNB) - BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Wednesday feared the emergence of an ‘evil force’ if the government unilaterally tries to hold the next election under a party government.
“An evil force may emerge to put the country’s independence and sovereignty at stake and disrupt democracy if the government tries to hold the next polls under a party government,” Moudud said.
He voiced the apprehension on Wednesday at an Iftar party arranged by Companyganj Forum, Noakhali in Dhaka at the National Press Club.
Addressing the programme prior to the Iftar, Moudud said the government scrapped the caretaker government system to stick to power through holding a farce election under their own arrangement.
Justifying their demand for holding the next election under a non-party caretaker government, the BNP standing committee member said: “We’re demanding it for two reasons -- to ensure the voting right of people so that they can choose their candidates without fear and save democracy checking the emergence of any evil force.”
He said the ruling party is trying to reestablish a one-party rule as it doesn’t believe in democracy.
Turning down the Prime Minister’s proposal for forming an interim government with political leaders, Moudud said the interim government must be constituted with apolitical persons. “No election will be held in Bangladesh under any political government.”
He, however, said they will gladly sit with the government if it declares that the next election will be held under a non-partisan administration.
The BNP leader said the 18-parrty alliance will not take part in any polls under a partisan government and foil the government’s move to hold such election.
Mentioning that no democratic movement has so far failed in the country, he said the opposition’s movement for caretaker government will surely be successful this time, too.
