
Dhaka, Aug 9 (UNB) – Eleven people, including a bank official and a university student, were killed and 26 injured in road accidents in Comilla, Narsingdi and Faridpur districts on Thursday.
According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, Five people were killed and four injured in three separate road accidents in Comilla.
Highway police said a senior bank official was killed and two people were injured as a Laxmipur bound private car from Dhaka crashed into a tree when its driver lost control over the steering at Banshpur on Comilla-Chandpur road in sadar Dakshin upazila at about 11 am.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam Majumder, a senior vice-president of National Bank while the injured were Robi official Wasim and car driver Idris.
Besides, three people were killed and two others injured in a road crash at Saheber Bazar on Comilla-Brahmanbaria road in Burichang upazila in the morning.
One of the deceased was identified as Abu Naser, a student of Chittagong University also hailed from Shahrasti upazila of Chandpur district.
Highway police said the accident took place at about 7am when a Chittagong-bound covered van from Brahmanbaria smashed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction, leaving its three passengers dead on the spot and two others injured.
The injured auto-rickshaw driver and a child were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Police recovered the bodies but could not seize the covered van.
Meanwhile, a woman was crushed under the wheels of an unidentified vehicle at Kalakachua on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at 8 am Sunday. The deceased could not be identified immediately.
In Narsingdi, four people were killed and 15 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck at Morjal on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Raipura upazila in the morning.
The deceased were identified as Shamim, 28, of Baniatola in Narsingdi town, Rajib, 35, of Narayanpur village in Belabo upazila and Shamsul Member, 40.
Police said the Dhaka-bound bus from Bhairab collided with the speeding truck in the area at about 9am, leaving the three dead on the spot and 15 others injured.
The injured were taken to Narsingdi General Hospital and Raipura Health Complex. One of the injured, a woman succumbed to her injuries at the Narsingdi General Hospital at about 11am.
The bodies were sent to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Police seized both the vehicles but the drivers managed to flee the scene.
In Faridpur, two people were killed and eight others injured when a bus crashed into a pickup van on Dhaka-Barisal highway at Basagari in Nagarkanda upazila, also in the morning.
One of the deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam Babul, 27, of Amrikapur village in Faridpur town.
Police said the accident occurred as a Bhanga-bound bus from Faridpur collided with the pickup van at about 9:15 am, leaving two bus passengers dead on the spot and others injured.
Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.
