THESSALONIKI, Greece, Aug 9 (AP/UNB) - Authorities say a large forest fire in northern Greece has forced the partial evacuation of a seaside resort village.
A fire brigade statement says elderly people and other vulnerable groups were removed from Ouranoupolis early Thursday and taken to a nearby beach.
Some houses also suffered fire damage in the blaze that broke out Wednesday in the neighboring Mount Athos peninsula.
Mount Athos is a semi-autonomous monastic community where women and female animals have not been allowed for the past thousand years. There were no immediate reports of damage to monasteries.
Smaller fires were also burning in southern Greece. The country is suffering from a heatwave.
