BNP fears political violence
It finds Shahara’s home-locking suggestion reprehensible
Dhaka, Aug 9 (UNB) - BNP front-ranking leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Thursday apprehended the reemergence of political violence as uncertainty looms large over the next election following the annulment of caretaker government system.
“Holding the next general election under a non-party caretaker government has now become a demand of the general people. A volatile situation may emerge if the government doesn’t meet the demand,” he told a discussion at the National Press Club.
Creative Development Programme (CDP), a pro-BNP organisation, arranged the discussion titled ‘Terrorism and Corruption in Education Sector and its Prevention’.
Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, accused the government of creating unrest in the education sector by patronising terrorism and extortion by Chhatra League and politicising the administrations of public universities.
He also alleged that the government in a planned way is trying to foil the next generation and make the country a ‘failed state’.
The BNP leader called upon the people from all walks of life to join the anti-government movement to be launched after Eid to unseat the present regime and restore academic atmosphere in all educational institutions.
He said the country has plunged into unbridled corruption and the World Bank unveiled their irregularities in Padma Bridge project.
Mosharraf said there would have been no uncertainty over Padma Bridge had Shiekh Hasina removed former Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain from her cabinet when corruption allegation was brought against him in September 2011.
Terming Abul Hossain ‘shameless’ for clinging to his post even after being charged with corruption by the WB, Mosharraf criticised Sheikh Hasina for describing Abul as a patriot.
Slating Home Minister Shahara Khatun for her suggestion that people should properly lock their houses before leaving the capital, Mosharraf said her remark has made people frightened.
Talking to reporters on Thursday at the secretariat, Shahara said; “There’s a concern over security during the Eid vacation as many people leave Dhaka for their village homes before the festival. So, those who will leave the city should make sure they have properly locked their houses."
Speaking on the occasion, former State Minister for Education Ehsanul Haque Milon said educational institutions across the country have observed 400 holidays because of political instability during the three and a half years period of the present regime.
He blamed the ruling party men for the present situation in educational institutions.
Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal and Swechchhasebak Dal president Habib-un-Nobi Khan Sohel, among others, spoke at the discussion presided over by CDP president Kawser Zaman Babla.
