News - Meghnaghat Power Plant sponsor looks for expansion
Dhaka, Aug 10 (UNB) – The private sponsor of the 450-MW Meghnaghat Power Plant, which has been producing the world’s cheapest electricity, wants to raise its capacity by another 170 MW.

The plant, being operated by Malaysian Pendekar Energy Group, is the largest base-load power plant project in the country.

The government has been purchasing electricity from the Meghnaghat power plant at below 2 cents per unit which is the lowest in the world.
Official sources said the Pendekar Energy Group recently applied to the Power Ministry for enhancing its capacity by another 170 MW power amid the growing demand for electricity.

But the Power Ministry is yet to give its consent to the Malaysian Group proposal. A Power Ministry senior official said they have invited the officials of Pendekar Group to a negotiation meeting billed for August 27.

“But the success of the negotiations depends on the tariff offer by Pendaker. If it is found suitable to the government, there might be a chance for breakthrough in the talks,” he said adding that Pendekar Energy wants gas supply at a cheaper price.

Meghnaghat Power plant was set up in 1998 by the American AES Corporation under a 22-year power purchase deal with the government. The AES then sold out the plant to a British firm which again sold it out to Pendekar Group.

Presently, the project ‘s MPL is 76 percent held by Pendekar Energy (L) Ltd, while the remaining 24 percent is held by Pendekar Energy Ventures (L) Ltd (“PEVL”). PEVL is a 55: 45 joint venture company between TEH Ventures (L) Ltd and Aljomaih Automotive Company Ltd.
