Militants have no border, no religion: PM
Dhaka, Aug 10 (UNB) – Terming Islam a religion of peace, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday said those who have indulged in militancy and terrorism have, in fact, no religion.
“As they have no border, they have no religion either,” she said while addressing a function marking the inauguration of a website ‘Al Quran: Digital’ held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
She also inaugurated the website www.quran.gov.bd.
Sheikh Hasina alleged that killing people in the name of Islam alongside bombing was a common phenomenon in Bangladesh during the of BNP-Jamaat alliance regime.
Mentioning that the present government has undertaken anti-militancy programmes to free the country from this stigma, the premier said ‘Alem Ulemas’ and religious leaders have been associated with these programmes.
Claiming that there is no militancy in the country now, the Prime Minister said people now can sleep and perform their religious rituals peacefully.
Sheikh Hasina urged all to work with utmost devotion to ensure the welfare of the common people following the spirit of Islam, the holy book Quran and Sunnah. “Let’s devote ourselves to the welfare of people and establishing peace in society forgetting vendetta. Let’s unite irrespective of race and creed for the sake of the country.”
Organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the function was held with State Minister for Religious Affairs Alhaj M Shahjahan Mia, MP in the chair. Secretary of the ministry Kazi Habibul Awal delivered the address of welcome. Khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Moulana Md Salahuddin was also present.
The Prime Minister also called upon all to continue their efforts so that more people become attracted to Islam and thus adopt this holy religion. “It’s the holy duty of all to protect and spread this religion (Islam),” she added.
Recalling the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with most of his family members in this Month in 1975, the premier said she has been trying to fulfill the basic rights of the common people with honesty, sincerity and integrity despite bearing such pain.
The Prime Minister also hoped that with the digitalisation of website on the holy Quran, it would be possible to reach the message of peace of the Almighty Allah through the people of all walks of life. She also extended her thanks to all concerned who were involved in such noble endeavour.
Hasina underscored the need for utilising the essence of Quran for the welfare of the human being after perceiving it. She said as Quran is a scientific great book, it also possesses guideline for personal, family and social lives. It has the messages of human rights, justice, equality, peace, brotherhood, inter-religious solidarity and harmony.
As Muslims, she said, all need to recite Quran and perceive its meaning.
Listing various steps taken by her government to build ‘Digital Bangladesh’ as envisaged in the election manifesto of ruling Awami League, Hasina mentioned that the government has already set up e-book and e-web portal containing 1 lakh pages, established district web portal and e-service centres in all the 64 districts, set up 4,582 union information and service centers where around 40 lakh people are receiving services every month.
Recalling the unprecedented contributions of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman towards spreading Islam in his three and a half years term, she said Bangabandhu had established the Islamic Foundation, Madrasa Board, allocated land for Biswa Ijtema at Tongi, provided land at Kakrail for setting up a mosque for Tablig Jamaat, started diplomatic relationships with the Muslim world and joined the OIC conference in Lahore to project the dignity of the country.
The digitalisation of the holy Quran facilitates recitation and translation of the holy book in Bangla and English apart from Arabic.
