Dhaka, August 10 (UNB) - Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Friday said opposition BNP is unwilling to go to the next general election under the present Election Commission (EC) as “it doesn't believe” in democracy.
“BNP doesn't believe in democracy. They want to destroy the country’s democracy,” he said at a seminar at the RC Majumder auditorium of Dhaka University in the morning.
Bangabandhu Shikkha and Gabeshana Parishad organised the seminar, titled ‘Resist Conspiracy, Protect the Country’.
Speaking as the chief guest, Suranjit said the BNP should not make any controversy about the present EC which has been formed through a search committee. “The EC should be further strengthened… we hope the opposition will help us do this.”
About the BNP’s demand for the restoration of caretaker system, he said a non-party caretaker government can never ensure real democracy.
Suranjit, also a presidium member of Awami League, said the government has already given a proposal to form an interim government with members from all political parties to make the next polls free, fair and credible.
He alleged that BNP wants to go to next general elections by destroying the country’s democracy, but, he said, the Awami League is trying to ensure democracy for the people.
“The Constitution is source of all laws, nobody can violate it. There is no scope to go beyond the constitution,” the AL leader said. “People are the source of all power, so opposition party should work for people.”
He said BNP should shun the politics of revenge and come back to parliament to avoid political and economic instability.
Chaired by vice chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, the seminar was addressed, among others, by senior advocate of Bangladesh Supreme Court Abdul Baset Majumder, vice chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Agriculture University Abdul Mannan Akand and advisory editor of Daily Ittefaq Habibur Rahman Milon.
