Rangpur, Aug 10 (UNB) - Blaming the chiefs of the two major parties --Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia -- for taking the country backwards, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Friday said removing the two ladies from politics is necessary to move the country forward.
“The two ladies have pushed the country backwards. There’s no alternative to removing the two ladies from politics to move the country forward,” he said.
The former military ruler reminded the much-talked-about minus-two formula while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a Rangpur-based daily ‘Dainik Amader Protidin’ in the city.
The minus-two formula cropped up after the 1/11 changeover in 2007.
The then Fakhruddin-Moyeenuddin-led interim regime had tried to remove Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from politics but their all efforts finally went in vain.
Ershad said the two parties only aim to go to power through elections, not to ensure welfare of people. “Jatiya Party must be brought back to power to save the country and democracy.”
Referring to the standoff between the government and the main opposition over the caretaker government (CG) system, the former president said it is now uncertain whether the next election will be held or not.
Voicing his apprehension about the political violence after Eid over the caretaker government issue, the Jatiya Party chief said people do not want to see any violence, they want peace and get rid of confrontational politics.
Annoyed at the misrules of Awami League and BNP, Ershad said people now want to see the emergence of an alternative force spearheaded by his party.
“Jatiya Party is now a well-organised party and will emerge as the third-force any time,” he told his audience.
Criticising the government for its failure to improve the law and order situation and bring down the prices of essentials, Ershad said people are not happy with the way the present government is running the country.
The former military dictator said Jatiya Party will not support any party in the future assume office. “It’ll rather form the government with people’s mandate.”
