Govt working to reduce infant, maternal mortality: Minister

Satkhira, Aug 10 (UNB) - Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr AFM Ruhal Haque on Friday said the present government has taken all necessary measures to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in the country.

“The government is working to develop skills of doctors and health workers at every community clinic who are providing the expecting mothers with necessary advices,” he said while addressing a workshop at Nalta Hospital.

Nalta Hospital and Rotary Club of Satkhira jointly organised the workshop on reducing child and maternal mortality rates.

The health minister said the rates of child and maternal mortality have decreased to a great extent in the country.

He said maternal mortality rate reduced to 194 women per 100,000 live births every year against 322 women per 100,000 live births in 1994. “The government is working to reduce the rate to 134.”

Later, the minister distributed stipend money among the students of Ashashuni upazila, inaugurated a fair on Ashashuni upazila premises and released fish fries at the pond of shrine of Khan Bahadur Ahsan Ullah in Nalta.
