News - Wozniak beats McHale to reach Rogers Cup quarters
MONTREAL, Aug 12 (AP/UNB) - Aleksandra Wozniak became the first Canadian in 20 years to each the Rogers Cup quarterfinals, beating American Christina McHale 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Saturday in a rain-delayed match.

Wozniak was one game from finishing off McHale on Friday night when the third-round match was halted by rain. The Canadian needed only a few minutes to close out the match Saturday in the hard court event.

The resident of Blainville, a suburb north of Montreal, became the first Canadian since Patricia Hy-Boulais in 1992, and only the fourth in modern times to reach the quarterfinals.

"I just wanted to finish off the match quickly and be able to rest for my next one," Wozniak said. "I came back and played aggressive. I'm really excited to be in the quarterfinals. I've always come with my friends to watch the best players in the world come to this big tournament. This tournament means a lot to me. For sure I'm going to come and be ready to do the best I can."

Wozniak will face Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki beat Varvara Lepchenko 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Wozniacki received treatment at courtside for a right leg problem early in the second set.

In the first two quarterfinals Saturday night, 10th-seeded Na Li beat second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-1, and 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova topped Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-2.

In the other quarterfinal, fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova faced Tamira Paszek.

In the men's tournament held in Toronto, Richard Gasquet advanced to the Rogers Cup final, beating eighth-seeded John Isner 7-6 (3), 6-3 on Saturday.

Gasquet, the Frenchman seeded 14th in the hard court tournament, will face the winner of the second semifinal between Serbian countrymen Novak Djokovic and Jarko Tipsarevic.
