
Dhaka, Aug 12 (UNB) - A special court here on Sunday sentenced 329 jawans of all Directorates and Rifle Sports Board of BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh) to different jail terms ranging upto seven years for their involvement in the bloody mutiny at Pilkhana headquarters in 2009.
The three-member Special Court-11, led by Brig Gen Nasir Uddin, also fined the convicts Tk 100 each. Two other members of the special court were Lt Col Rabiul Alam and Maj MA Razzaque.
Thirty-seven of the convicts were jailed for seven years, 19 for six years, two for five years and six months, 33 for five years, four for four years and six months, 90 for four years, one for three years and six months, 93 for three years, five for two years and six months, 21 for two years, five for one year and six months, 11 for one year, one for six months and seven for four months.
The special court also acquitted seven BDR jawans as the charges brought against them were not proved.
On October 26, 2010, a total of 337 BDR jawans of Directorates and Rifle Sports Board of Pilkhana were indicted for their involvement in the mutiny.
Later, the name of an accused was chucked out from the proceedings as he was not a member of the Directorates and Rifle Sports Board.
A total of 73 people, including 57 army officers, were killed during the bloody mutiny at Pilkhana on February 25-26 in 2009.
Hundreds of BDR men rose up in armed revolt at Darbar Hall on February 25 during the three-day-long ‘BDR Week’ inside the Pilkhana headquarters.
They staged the mutiny over low pay and poor condition, and the uprising sparked off mutinous demonstrations in other establishments of the paramilitary border force across the country.
The mutiny finally ended the next day (February 26) with the surrender of the firearms and grenades through negotiations between the government and the BDR rebels.
After the mutiny, the BDR was dismantled and renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
