Dhaka, Aug 12 (UNB) – Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Col (retd) Faruk Khan on Sunday said direct flights between Bangladesh and Myanmar will begin soon after the formal signing of the air service agreement (ASA) between the two countries.
The ASA will formally be signed during Myanmar President Thein Sein’s visit to Bangladesh.
General Thein Sein, who was scheduled to be here on a three-day visit to Bangladesh on July 15, is expected to arrive here soon. His visit was earlier postponed due to his domestic compulsion.
Faruk Khan disclosed this when Myanmar’s Ambassador in Dhaka Myo Myint Than met him at his office.
Once the deal is formally signed, he said, several airlines, including the national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines and private airlines, will be able to operate passenger and cargo flights between the two neighbouring countries.
At present, there is no direct flight between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Though an agreement on direct flight was signed between the two countries in 1977, it could not be executed.
