News - Complete war crimes trial to avoid catastrophe: Nirmul Committee
Dhaka, Aug 13 (UNB) – The country may face a catastrophe if the trial of war criminals is not completed by 2013, leaders of Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee said here on Monday.

They warned that the government and the ministries concerned will have to shoulder the responsibility for such catastrophe in case of failure to complete the trial of war criminals.

The Nirmul Committee leaders also demanded a permanent tribunal in line with the Constitution so that the trials of war criminals can be continued with interruption even after change in state power.

They came up with the observation at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

International Crimes Tribunal Supportive Platform, Sector Commanders Forum 71, Bangladesh Mohila Parishad, Projonmo 71 and Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee jointly arranged the press conference to press for the trial of the war criminals.

Executive president of Ekatturer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir read out a written statement at the press conference.

Noted academician and Dhaka University Prof Muntasir Mamun, Shaymoly Nasrin Chowdhury, Barrister Dr Turin Afroz, Shahin Reza Nur of Projonmo Ekattur and Ayesha Khanum of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad were present.

In his written statement, Shahriar Kabir said, “The trial of the war criminals is going on slowly for lack of required workforce and other support….and we fear that the ongoing trial of 10 (suspected war criminals) may not be completed by December 2013.”

He said, “We demand steps to make the tribunal permanent and independent both administratively and financially through enacting a law.”

“We hoped the Prime Minister will take effective steps quickly to employ required workforces and ensure other requirements for the tribunal to expedite the trial process,” Shahriar Kabir added.
