Kurigram, Aug 14 (UNB) – A person was killed and seven others were injured in a clash between two groups over a jalmahal (water body) at Pateshwari village in Bhurungamari upazila on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Habibar Rahman, 58, of the same village. The injured are Shaheen Alam, 25, Atab Ali, 65, Nur Islam, 55, Ibrahim, 50, Mofizul, 25, Taser, 26 and Sayem, 29.

Officer-in-charge of Bhurungamari Police Station Ahsan Habib said there had been a longstanding dispute between the members of Pateshwari land owners association and Pateshwari fish development and management committee over occupying Pateshwari Jalmahal.

The water body has been in possession of the land owners association for long.

The clash ensued on Monday noon when members of the fish development and management committee went to grab the jalmahal only to be prevented by their rivals.

A chase and counter chase took place during the melee, killing Habibar on the spot and injuring others.

The injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Additional police have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
