Buenos Aires subways reopen after 10-day strike
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, Aug 14 (AP/UNB) - Subways are moving again in Buenos Aires after a 10-day strike, but a power struggle between the mayor and Argentina's president remains unresolved.
Union leaders agreed to temporarily suspend their strike after subway operator Metrovias agreed to give them more vacation days and other benefits. Metrovias also promised a 23 percent pay hike. The workers had wanted 28 percent to keep up with inflation.
But the extra pay won't come until the company gets millions more in government subsidies. And that can't happen until President Cristina Fernandez and Mayor Mauricio Macri resolve their fight over who's supposed to be in charge of the system.
After 10 days of waiting for overcrowded buses, nearly a million commuters were just thankful to ride subways to work Monday.
