Comilla, Aug 16 (UNB) - A 50-km tailback was created on the busy Dhaka-Chittagong Highway following a road crash at Jinglatoli in Daudkandi upazila on Thursday, inflicting sufferings on thousands of homebound passengers.
Daudkandi highway police sergeant Mehdi Hasan said a truck driver, Liton Miah ,40, was killed and his helper injured when a covered van collided with a Chittaong-bound truck from Dhaka at Jinglatoli early in the morning.
The accident disrupted traffic on Dhaka-Chittagong highway for one and a half hours, causing the 50-km traffic gridlock from Arikhola in Chandina upazila to Bhaberchar in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj district, he said.
Although traffic movement resumed around 8 am after the removal of the damaged vehicles with a wrecker, the situation did not improve that much due to pressure of huge number of vehicles on the highway.
Managing director of Meghna-Gumti bridge toll collection authorities engineer Mahbub Kabir said as the two bridges are now in vulnerable condition, only 50 vehicles are passing the bridges in one minute on average against 100 in the past. “This is another reason why the highway sees frequent jams,” he said.
