Dhaka, Aug 16 (UNB) – Venting frustration over the government’s ‘inaction’ to trace Ilias Ali though four months have elapsed since his disappearance, opposition BNP on Thursday said the government will run into a great trouble over the issue.
“Though the demand for returning Ilias Ali has become a national issue, the government is doing nothing to this end. Government agencies are not responding to any of our queries which make our belief stronger that this regime and its people are behind Ilias’ disappearance,” he told reporters when he visited Ilias’ Banani residence.
Fakhrul had been there at noon with Eid gifts for the family members of the missing BNP leader on behalf of his party on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
BNP organising secretary Ilias Ali went missing along with his driver, Ansar Ali, on April 17 midnight. BNP blamed security agencies for his mysterious disappearance, an allegation denied by the government.
Accusing the government of making disappeared those who are raising voice against its misdeeds, Fakhrul said: “Disappearance is a heinous crime in a democratic country. It’s also a crime against humanity as per the United Nations Charter.”
The BNP spokesman once again alleged that the government picked Ilias up as he had waged a strong movement in the greater Sylhet against the Tipaimukh Dam.
Claiming that 135 opposition leaders and activists have disappeared since this government has assumed office, Fakhrul said the driver of former Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta’s APS has also remained missing since he droved the car into BGB headquarters with the bribed money of Tk 70 lakh. ”Those who witnessed the incident of picking up Ilias have also gone missing.”
Asked whether they believe Ilias is alive, the BNP leader said: “Still, we have no information about Ilias’ demise. We’re assured by the Prime Minister of returning him back. Ilias’ family members also think he is alive and the government will return him.”
On May 2, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina assured Ilias’ wife, Tahsina Rushdir Luna, of doing her best to trace him. She gave the assurance when Luna and her three children met the Prime Minister at her official residence Ganobhaban.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Fakhrul visited Ilias Ali’s village home at Biswanath upazila in Sylhet, met his distraught mother and consoled her.
Fakhrul said they will wage a stronger movement after Eid to force the government to return Ilias Ali and restore the caretaker government system.
He went to Ilias Ali’s Banani house around 12:25pm, talked to his wife, his younger son and daughter and enquired about their wellbeing.
