News - B'desh needs to ensure ‘transparency’ in visa procedures: Envoy
Indonesian Ambassador Zet Mirzal Zainuddin
Dhaka, Aug 17 (UNB) – Indonesian Ambassador to Bangladesh Zet Mirzal Zainuddin on Friday said Bangladesh should ensure ‘transparency’ in visa procedures to attract Indonesian traders and tourists.

Talking to reporters at a flag-raising ceremony on the 67th Independence Day of Indonesia at the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka, he said his country over the last three and a half years has eased the visa procedures for Bangladeshi citizens, but Bangladesh has not done enough to ensure the transparency in the procedures to Indonesian citizens.

“Over the last three and half years, I’ve never seen the transparency in the national visa policy,” he said, adding that Indonesian citizens, including the tourists and traders, have long been raising complaints about the visa tariffs that vary from person to person.

“We’ve conveyed our concern over the transparency of the visa many times to relevant authorities, but standard tariff for the visa is yet to be seen by Indonesian citizens,” he added.

The Indonesian envoy also pointed out that the bilateral trade between the countries, which has been increasing very fast in recent times is expected to have exceeded the US$ 1.4 billion in the recently past fiscal.

“But to keep up the momentum, you need to be more transparent in the visa sanctioning to traders and tourists,” he said.

In his speech at the flag-raising ceremony, Zainuddin said Indonesia has already got the 16th position among the world economic powers, and aims to ascent to the 10th position by 2030.

The main reasons behind the stable economic growth of Indonesia have been the political stability and cultural harmony that is an outcome of the unity of the people, irrespective of their ethnicity, he stressed.
