Dhaka, Aug 19 (UNB) - The main opposition BNP will announce agitation programmes soon in consultation with the partners of the 18-party alliance to force the government to restore the caretaker government system.
“We would like to make it clear there’ll be no election in the country without the nonparty caretaker government. The next election must be held under a neutral and nonparty administration,” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
He was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of party founder late President Ziaur Rahman in the city marking the 322nd founding anniversary of its front organisation Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal.
Fakhrul said the BNP standing committee and leaders of the 18-party alliance will sit very soon to finalise the agitation programmes.
Mentioning that the demand for restoration of the CG has become a national one, the BNP spokesman said the government will have no option but to meet the demand in the face of their movement.
About Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad’s comment on his return from India that his party will contest the next election independently to test its popularity, Fakhrul said people will give the reply with their ballots.
Swechchhasebak Dal president Habib-un Nabi Khan Sohel, general secretary Mir Sharafat Ali, and leaders and activists of the BNP’s volunteer wing also placed wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman on the occasion.
