Dhaka, Aug 22 (UNB) – Hours after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 issued a warrant for his arrest, police on Wednesday arrested acting secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami ATM Azharul Islam, a war crimes suspect.
Police picked up the Jamaat leader from his Moghbazar residence around 2.20 pm.
Earlier in the day, the ICT-1 issued the warrant for the arrest of Azharul for “effective and proper investigation” into his alleged war crimes.
Passing the order upon a prosecution plea, a three-member tribunal, headed by Justice M Nizamul Huq, asked the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner to produce Azharul within 24 hours following his arrest.
Moving the plea, prosecutor Noorjahan Mukta told the tribunal that the investigation officer had already collected “sufficient evidence and information” about the crimes against humanity perpetrated by Azharul, the then Islami Chhatra Sangha (ICS) president, Rangpur district unit.
Referring to the ongoing investigation report, the prosecutor said Azharul was involved in killings of more than 1200 innocent people in Rangpur during the Liberation War in 1971 in collaboration with Pakistan occupation army.
War crimes-suspect Azharul was also involved in the killings of intellectuals, cultural personalities, physicians and lawyers at different areas in Rangpur district during the Liberation War, said the prosecutor.
