Dhaka, Aug 22 (UNB) – At least 42 people were killed and some 200 injured in road accidents at different parts of the country from Saturday to Tuesday, turning the plans of many Eid holidaymakers into tragedies. 

Three people were killed and 32 others injured as two buses collided on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Rajendrapur in Sadar upazila at 4pm on Wednesday.

On Saturday, 10 people were killed and 24 others injured in road accidents in Munshiganj, Comilla, Kushtia and Moulvibazar districts.

In Moulvibazar, seven members of a family were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision between a microbus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Rajnagar upazila on Saturday afternoon.

Six of the deceased were identified as Pranati, Unai, Anima, Sajib, Brishti and Asha. The identity of the other deceased could not be known yet.

On Monday, at least 10 people were killed and 81 injured in Munshiganj, Noakhali, Sylhet, Comilla and capital Dhaka. 

At least 19 people were killed and 60 others injured in road accidents in six districts in the country on Tuesday.   

Of the deaths, five were reported from Natore, four from Pabna, three from Keraniganj of Dhaka, one from Gaibandha, five from Comilla and one from Bagerhat.

In Natore, five people were killed and 15 injured in a road accident at Gormati in Boraigram upazila on Natore-Pabna Highway on the day.

Four of the deceased were identified as school students Milon, 15, Nantu, 16, Joynal, 14, and Sujon, 14, of Daulaltpur upazila in Kushtia district.

Quoting witnesses, police said the accident occurred when a Natore-bound BRTC bus smashed two ‘Nasimans’ (locally-made human haulers) at about 12 noon. Police said 20 youths were on their way to Rajbari in Natore from Kushtia. 

In Pabna, four people, including a baby boy, were killed and 25 others injured in a fatal road accident in Ishwardi upazila.

The dead were identified as Shabab, 1, son of Monira of Kushtia, and three bikers -- Shamim, 27, Enamul Haque, 30, and Shahidul Islam, 27. The three bikers hailed from the same upazila.    

Police said the accident took place when a Jhenidah-bound bus of Hanif Paribahan coming from Dhaka hit a motorcycle from behind near Joynagar union parishad office, killing one of its riders on the spot and injuring two others.

After hitting the bike, the bus fell into a roadside ditch around 2:45pm, killing its passenger Shabab on the spot and injuring 25 passengers, including Monira.

One of the injured bikers died on the way to a local hospital, while another on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. The injured were admitted to different hospitals.

In Keraniganj, three minors died and three others were injured as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a bus collided around 12:30pm at Rajendrapur near the under-construction Dhaka Central Jail under South Keraniganj upazila in Dhaka.

In Kushtia, sub-inspector Moklesur Rahman, 42, posted at Tala thana of Satkhira, was injured as he along with his motorbike fell into a roadside ditch at Kachuabari in Mirpur upazila on Saturday night while he was coming to his Daulatpur upazila residence here to celebrate the Eid.  

He died on the way to General Hospital.
