4 foreign workers abducted off Nigeria coast freed

Lagos, Nigeria, Aug 23 (AP/UNB) - An oil and gas company says four foreign workers kidnapped off the coast of Nigeria have been freed.

Spokeswoman Corrie van Kessel of the Sea Trucks Group, an oil and gas contractor with offices in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, said Thursday that the men were released late Wednesday night. Van Kessel said the men were in good health, but declined to say whether a ransom had been paid for their release.

Nigeria's navy had said those abducted by the gunmen included an Indonesian, an Iranian, a Malaysian and a worker from Thailand. The kidnapping happened Aug. 4 off the coast of Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta.

Militant and criminal attacks have waned in the delta after a 2009 government-sponsored amnesty deal. However, kidnappings still take place.
