
Dhaka, Aug 23 (UNB) – Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh U Myo Myint Than on Thursday informed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that tension in violence-hit Rakhine state has eased following effective steps taken by his government.
Myint Than, who met the Prime Minister at her office, said the Myanmar government has formed a high-powered investigation commission to look into the real causes behind the incidents and make recommendations in the greater interests of the nation.
Sheikh Hasina has appreciated Myanmar’s success in tackling the sectarian violence in Rakhine state saying that socioeconomic development and equal treatment to all people is the solution for lasting peace.
After the meeting, PM’s press secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters about the outcome of the meeting.
Various issues relating to bilateral interests, including the expansion of trade and commerce were also discussed during the meeting.
Sheikh Hasina told the Ambassador that Bangladesh will appreciate Myanmar’s early acceptance of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) submitted by Dhaka to import hydro-electric power from Rakhaine and Chinn states.
Hasina hoped that the Myanmar government will soon start repatriating refugees from Kutupalong and Nayapara camps of Cox’s Bazar district as pledged by the President of Myanmar.
Mentioning the existing special relationship between the two countries, the Prime Minister said Bangladesh wants to take the relationship to an enviable height.
Hasina also said Bangladesh is ready to sign the revised Air Services Agreement to enable private airlines to operate on Dhaka-Chittagong-Yangon route.
Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin was present on the occasion.
