Jamalpur, Aug 23 (UNB) - Land Minister Rezaul Karim Hira said here on Thursday that the target of fish production would be bigger this time as the country’s maritime boundary has expanded by 1.11 lakh square kilometers.

“We’ve taken initiatives to ensure the safe breeding of Hilsa and reemergence of the fish verities that disappeared,” he told a discussion at the auditorium of Jamalpur UNO office after releasing around 550 kgs of fish fry (Rui) at nine spots.

The Land Minister said steps are being taken to increase safe sanctuaries for fish in rivers and water-bodies to boost fish production. “Currently, the country produces around 32 lakh metric tonnes of fish a year.”   

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Kabir Al Asad, Jamalpur Sadar upazila chairman Bijon Kumar Chanda, Upazila Nirbahi officer Lutfun Nahar, Upazila Fisheries officer Ranjit Kumar Paul and Sadar Awami League organizing secretary Khaleduzzaman Pradip were also present.

Earlier, the minister laid the foundation stone of a 600-km road (Pingolhati-Beltia) in the district.
