News - Recasting Sonali Bank board not BB’s duty: Muhith
Dhaka, Aug 28 (UNB) – Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday voiced dissatisfaction over the central bank’s recent recommendation for recasting Sonali Bank’s board of directors saying it is not their duty.

“It’s not their duty,” he said when comments sought on the Bangladesh Bank’s (BB) recommendation on the sidelines of a workshop on Public Private Partnership in higher education at the University Grants Commission.

Asked again about the letter he received from the BB recommending ‘drastic action’ against the state-owned Sonali Bank, he repeated, “It’s not their duty.”

Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Monday sent a letter to the Finance Minister as per clause 46(6) of the Bank Company Act 1991, requesting him to recast Sonali Bank board of directors to ensure its better functioning and transparent operation.

Earlier, the central bank directed the Sonali Bank authorities to suspend 31 of its officials, including two deputy managing directors by Thursday for their alleged involvement in the Tk 3,547 crore loan scam.

In its letter, the central bank asked the board of directors of the state-run commercial bank for taking action against the officials so that they could not affect the activities of the bank.

Unethical disbursement of loans to little known Hallmark Group and some other firms came to light following audits.

The central bank said around Tk 3,547 crore was embezzled through unfair means.

Of the 31 officials, AKM Azizur Rahman, deputy general manager of the bank's Ruposhi Bangla Hotel branch (formerly Sheraton Hotel branch), and Saiful Hasan, assistant general manager of the same branch, have already been suspended.
