Dhaka, Aug 29 (UNB) – BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Wednesday alleged that the government has annulled the old medical admission test, aiming to make a quick buck through admission trade.
“The government’s decision to cancel the medical admission test is autocratic and farcical. They’ve taken the heinous decision aiming to do admission trade and commit corruption,“ he said.
Mosharraf, also a former Health Minister, came up with the allegation at a discussion on MBBS and BDS Admission Tests-2012 at the National Press Club organised by Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (Dab).
On August 12, the government announced that the admission of students to medical and dental colleges and institutions for MBBS course will be done based on their SSC and HSC results, relieving them of admission test.
According to the government decision, local students who will have minimum GPA-8 jointly in SSC and HSC examinations will be considered eligible for the admission, while the minimum grade of GPA-7 for foreign students.
The decision sparked protests by a section of medical admission seekers across the country and they have continued their agitations demanding annulment of the new admission system.
Terming the decision politically motivated, Mosharraf said the main reason behind the government’s move is to create chances for the children of the ruling party men to have them admitted to medical and dental colleges depriving the meritorious students.
He said though there was no objection or criticism from the students and guardians about the admission test system, the government unilaterally and unnecessarily scrapped it.
Referring to the movement of the admission seekers, the BNP leader said: “We express our solidarity with the protesters.”
Describing the demand of the students logical, he denounced and protested the police action on the students demonstrating for the restoration of admission test system.
Stressing the need for the admission test for proper evaluation, Mosharraf said it is not right to think that the merits of the students having the same GPA are the same.
He also urged the government to reinstate the medical admission test system rescinding its decision to remove the concern of the students and their guardians.
