News - Buet Crisis: Teachers, students resume sit-in programmes

Dhaka, Sept 2 (UNB) - The teachers and students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) on Sunday resumed their sit-in programmes in front of its Council Building to push for their demand for the removal of its Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor.

The agitating students also burnt the effigy of the Buet VC, Pro-VC and brought out a procession at about 11:30 am.

Earlier, at about 11 am, the demonstrators formed a human chain in front of the Civil Engineering Building.

The Buet teachers also staged a sit-in in front of the VC office though the VC did not turn up till filing of the report at about12:30pm.

On Saturday, the Buet students warned that they would go for a tougher movement if its Vice-Chancellor and pro-Vice Chancellor do not step down by Sunday morning.

Buet reopened on August 25 after a 44-day vacation announced earlier amid a tough movement launched by its teachers and students demanding removal of its VC.

However, the teachers did not go for any agitation programme under the Buet Teachers’ Association due to a High Court ban in this regard.

The High Court on July 31 slapped an injunction on the movement of the teachers and students of Buet against the Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university.

Amid the threat by its teachers to go for an indefinite class boycott, the Buet authorities announced Eid-ul-Fitr vacation in advance from July 10 to August 24.

The academic activities at Buet remain halted since the reopening on Aug 25 due to class boycott and agitations by the teachers and students.Top of Form
